Plettenberg Bay is not what I would call a bustling seaside resort and the beaches are not very interesting. But, we do have plenty of sand and sun though. We have a Whale watching company here on the Main Beach.

I was lucky getting free trips on this boat and be able to take such photos close up. I have taken several hundred of these and it was exhilarating to be so close when the Whales breached. Most of the year you can see the Dolphins and Cape Fur Seals in a colony near Robberg.

This was also taken from the boat when approaching Robberg Peninsular.

We have had a few fires around that area lately.

Both these Bats were photographed in the garden with flash.

We bow out to part one and a Sunrise over the Bay………………..

When I get spare time I like to write blogs. The weather today is crap, haven`t seen the sun all day. I also have a dongle which was given to me and has 2Gb of data so I must use it before the end of the month πŸ™‚

The sky isn`t even as bright as this sunrise from this time last year.

It rained a lot in Cape Town a while ago, it`s raining now so I hope it doesn`t keep on too long.

Sometimes I`m lucky and a bird flies though the sunrise and sunset, it`s usually the later.

But after dark come the Bats. These are all the ones that came through my garden in one night. To get these I actually took over a hundred frames.

I didn`t even know it was another holiday until i went to the Chemist and found it closed. Then I came home and switch the TV on but the news was full of JZ stating it was a day for the oppressed workers, couldn`t see his point so switched off.

Well with that over I think it was better when I woke up at least the Sunrise was better.

I did a bit of gardening while my Wife sowed some seeds. today was good for harvesting the Carrots, Turnips and a few late tomatoes. The Chinese Cabbages seem to be overgrowing as we haven`t eaten so many lately. Every time i turn the soil over there seems to be more Mantis around, some of them are brown which seems a bit unusual. As for spiders they are prolific at the moment, maybe looking for warmer places. although if the Butcher Bird sees them they are breakfast πŸ™‚

My Daughter is selling the Whale Watching business so I won`t be getting so many whale photos for my blog. This is one of my favorites maybe because it was the first time I got up close at a Breaching. Before most were Videos and were taken from the cliffs in Hermanus. a whale washed up on the beach there and i was asked to film the whole of the Flensing operation because they just wanted the bones for a museum exhibition.

I think a few of the old jokes may liven the day. Have a great weekend.

Looking through my files I see that I haven`t investigated Bats for some time. It was very hit and miss when trying to photograph them as there is a delay from the time you see them to when the shutter operates.

I can`t remember this being a problem with a film camera. I was however fortunate to get some shots of them in flight by taking about 100 frames with a digital camera with a flash. Sometimes the background was white and there was plenty of reflections from the flash but most were above my head. If they were too close they came out white but luckily some were the right distance away.

Here is the circuit that I managed to solder together a few weeks ago and managed to make some recordings. to listen I used an old pair of earphones from an MP3 player.#

I tried to put some recordings on the blog but they won`t upload. I will put them on iblog and make a link.

Just another sunrise, but a least it didn`t rain.

Bats eat in trees sometimes.

Looking at this Bat reminds me of Alice`s eyes, very hairy. πŸ™‚

If it`s too big to eat in flight they hang upside down in a tree and eat. When the prey is on the ground they make quite a noise when they hit from above. They sometimes catch prey on the lawn, like crickets and grasshoppers. They are so fast that I am going to have to use electronic methods to photograph them.

This was taken at the side of the house by luck. I was testing the flash unit. I tried with a laser beam across the garden but they flew faster than the switch would operate. so from then on it was just luck and sorting through about one hundred shots. I managed to get 5 good photo`s from that exercise. πŸ™‚
