I found this picture of `Alice` when she was quite small.  She had delivered her fist litter by now and become a pet.

I had to build many different houses for her in the next few years. When she was first pregnant we thought that it was because she was a Potbellied Pig and was just developing. as she was so small and didn`t look old enough to have young. The problem is that she came from the Wolf Sanctuary and there are a lot of boars of all sizes walking free.

When I built a house next to my stoop she used to come every morning about 6 o`clock for breakfast. She would rattle the gate until I came outside. After breakfast it was a complete bushing all over her body, it certainly made the fir shine and it calmed her down when she was in Estrus. She would then walk with me round the small holding boundry like a dog, except I never tried a lead. She grew to be a huge pig but was always active. As you can see in number 4 she grew a long mane during the winter, which she didn`t mind me holding her back with when we had problems. If strangers came onto the property she would chase them barking like a dog, but would always come back when I whistled.Going from the gate to the house which was over 250 meters she could keep up with my car doing at least 30 km/h.

It was Alice`s morning ritual that got me into photographing the sunrise every day.

I`ve heard of a Dog in the manger but this looks like a goat.

Here is a map and some of the trails for 4X4 drivers and if you want to stay in a cave, there is accommodation. There is something rather appealing, living in a cave, maybe it`s like going back in time to the Stone Age 🙂

The 4X4 trail from the top of the Kloof.

For accommodation there are caves that have been converted to B&B`s.

The metal detecting got mostly military bullets from pre 1994, a couple of more recent ones were found so maybe the military still use this place for training although I never saw any.

The only bullet head that was found was only the size on the nail of my little finger and was a ricochet.

These are the rest of the military finds. The next sites will have to be from the Boer war if we can detect there. I find that now I am doing more geocaching because my youngest Daughter is more into that than metal detecting. the two actually go well together but i put my finds into a cache for those who don`t detect.

When Mike and Nevile Bramley were the leading lights in the `Hells Angels` in Jo`berg. Mike had a customizing. shop and Nevile had the `Pink panther`. Mike had a bike that he made himself that was used on the `Rainbow Strip` and it was the fastest thing around. There was a photo of it on an earlier blog.

This belonged to a new member who hadn`t got his colors yet.
What brought this on was being in town today and seeing the wake of one of our local bikers who had been with the Mak`s for many years. It was quite a turnout and even the main street was blocked off by the local police. I`ve put a few photos on the blog but the rest are on Facebook. I tried to make an album but not being very knowledgeable in Facebook it didn`t work. There is still about 30 photos of the event on my page. Keith William

I used to drive around the Dam every weekend and very often would find a lot of `Hells Angels` out on their weekend drive. Although not a member I was accepted and had many interesting coffee breaks.I still remember the `Viking` as he wore a hemet with horns on it.

I have found out in a very short time from friends that Facebook is not the place to put a blog. the main thing is that people don`t read them as they are probably to hard to find unless you have 100 friends. Also when asking family members they tell me that it`s mostly getting as many likes and friends as you can, that is the status.I found it difficult as things always seemed to pop up in the wrong place. They tell me it`s just old age and it`s really for youngsters to brag on how good their life is, even if it`s only in cyber space 😉  I find it useful for finding companies as most of them have a page.

There was another march on the police station today, with it`s Brass Band which could be heard from the other end of Town.

the Cougel was back again today, I think it`s a youngster as it`s a bit smaller that the last pair. Latter today they cut the hedge below the wall so we may get less birds now.

I still like to put the sunrise on the blog while I still can, as we may be forced to leave soon if the place is sold by the owner.

That`s one way to take the family out, and save fuel. I think even our trafic cops would notice a bit of overloading on this bike. I hope it`s not a 50cc or he will need a push start.

Clearing out a hard drive is about the same as trying to un-clutter your cupboards. It`s quite disappointing when you look in the cupboards to find something and there is so much clutter that it takes forever to find what you want. I have tried to sell things but it seems that they are only worth anything to me. Well now I have my solution, everything that hasn`t been used for 2 years gets thrown out or given away. But with a hard drive some of the old photos have to be kept because maybe that shot wont be taken again. The thing I do is make it 500 pixels wide so it can still be seen on the screen. At least they only occupy a few kb instead Mb`s.

I always take the sunrise in the morning as that starts my day taking photos. i now have thousands of these of which most have been reduced like this one.

Situations like this are quite rare, I only managed this twice with different frogs.

This fetus was taken from a dead Sperm Whale that washed up on the beach a few years ago. i also made a video of the flensing that was done by a Taxidermist who was going to re-assemble the bones for a museum.

A few years ago I had an Artistic moment and made things from some of the old wood we found in the  forest. They have all since been given away and this is the only reminder. Sometimes we have to keep these reminders even if it`s just for ourselves.

The reason this is still around is because all these were found while taking my brothers dog for a walk, when I stayed with him in the UK last year. They tasted great and I used to fill my pockets every day. There were fruits also if you wanted to pick them because the ones on the ground were over ripe or had maggots in them.

I like to keep a record of Alice`s life as I saw her through several years of her life when I stayed on the farm. She wasn`t looked after by anyone so we took her under our wing. I built her a house next to my stoop and she would walk with me around the bush. She was very protective and loved to be brushed when we got back, then she would sleep for a while.

I hope this tour wasn`t too boring, but I have sorted a lot of photos out. All the best Leo

In many of my earlier blogs Alice may have been portrayed as my pig, this was a misconception. My Daughter actually bought the pig from the Wolf Sanctuary last year. I took on the responsibility because she was too busy, having a family and a business to run. I think that Alice has had a varied life that has sometimes has been hard. I used to visit her very frequently, especially when she gave birth to her 5 piglets, one of which was still born. They were given away as pets after a few months. One of them lives nearby and is taken for walks on a leash. Alice however was too old to do this with but I got her to follow me around with a few snorts and a pocket full of Acorns. Now I stay on the farm and see her every day. Since the births she comes into season every month and for 3 days she is very strange. She is a very stubborn pig and tries to bite every ones feet at this time. Since the heavy rains the other week she has been flooded out of her pen and I am now on my second temporary shelter for her. This last one is next to my stoop as she has decided to sleep next to the food source. Yesterday I heard that she will be going to a nearby farm and be integrated in a breading program so will not be blogging on her progress anymore.

I have learned a lot about pigs in this last year by reading and being in the company of Alice. Although she follows me wherever I go on the farm she still has a great love of foraging for roots and greenery. I have to wait sometimes, sitting on a tree stump for a while until she decides to move on. Pigs like to dig up their own roots because when I have got them for her she very often wont eat them. They are very good food clock, she knows as soon as the sun rises I hear her at my gate snorking for her breakfast and again before the sun sets. I will be sorry to see her go and will miss making interesting meals and shelters. My biggest worry is that if she does not breed well she will be Christmas dinner. Pork will never be the same again.

On a lighter note here is a bit of photo Shopping.

These are a few Avitars from Letterpress that caught my eye.
