Things have been a bit hectic around Plett since the big fire.Taking a drive round the back roads there are still a lot of places that need to be cleared of half burned shrubs and trees. There are still hot spots around which were caused mainly by sparks blown in the wind.

We are having a good rain at the moment so the little fires should get dampened. We went to the farm at the weaken and there were still a few swirls of smoke coming from the bush. They were mostly the pine needles and dead leaves but still flare up when the berg wind blew. It`s been a cold wind for a few days so that does help.

One of the other problems is the water restrictions. I don`t worry so much with the flowers anymore but having a water butt enables me to keep my veggies growing. It`s amassing how little water is needed on some veggies to keep them in good health. It`s very strange how a house that is only meters away from the fire front can escape completely.

This farm only had vynbos around it so was not difficult to save.

It is easy to see a local car now in the car park as they are coated with ash. I left my car windows just cracked open but the next day it looked like a snow globe inside. Not only is it like living in an ashtray when traveling round but the inside of the car had to have a body spray. There has been a few cases of youngsters letting off crackers and signal flares in the bush beneath the lookout, some have been arrested. I think they are trying to get some time off school because the one I saw was a local teenager .

Today the sunrise was like a black and white film, so it will be a few days before there is some colour. There was at least a little green still surviving amongst the ashes.

I haven`t blogged for a while and am suffering from withdrawal as I used to be a bloggerholic. The sky in the morning always seems more interesting in the winter months soย  will start off with yesterday.

As we have a problem with water in the Cape its quite surprising that there are so many veggies still growing.I`ve been using rain water for a while now and it`s getting low so may have to use grey water.

There are quite a few insects and other creepy crawlies around. i find the Prey Mantis very resourceful. When they catch a bee or wasp they keep the sting out of the way while they eat it.i was very surprise to see the even eat Gecko`s, but they do it while it is alive.

Whilst cutting up a Butternut Squash these seeds were found growing inside of it, has anyone seen this before ? Some of the shoots had green on them which usually only happens when exposed to light ?

A lot has happened in this last few days, but in my opinion it should have happened years ago after his first blunder.

Do you remember when this coin would buy a box of matches ?cows head

And I thought that only wild animals got mounted. Surely this didn`t need tracking ?

camwet

This little camera makes a good carcam and can also be viewed on my smartphone while shopping, so is better than an alarm. It`s used for divers under water and divers from planes. It came with a host of mounting attachments.

There are still some old friends that come to visit so all is not lost.

It seems that spelling in school is still a problem even though we have so many departments.

During the Whale season here we don`t get photos like this very often as there seems to be quite a radicle change in the whale population.you have to go quite far out in the bay now and most of the Whales are not Southern Right Whales like they were a few years ago.

firstfairyhouse

It`s quite funny how a few years ago I was building fairy houses like this for my grand children and now all they want to see is a smart phone or computer. where do the years go to as you get older ? These photos have been on earlier blogs which seems to be a form of rambling but they are from ones that never went anywhere ๐Ÿ™‚

It`s strange when you look at photos after downsizing. Sometimes you don`t remember where they went, other times giving things away leaves a lasting memory.

These were made from bits of wood that I found in Tokia forest, but gave them all away to friends and family. Some I still see when I visit old friends.

This display wason the wall of my workshop, most of them are now in the UK at my brothers Dojo and are still seem by many of his students.

This is the bike that was raced at the Rainbow track in Jo`burg when Mike Bramley still ran `Hells Angels` They were great days and possible the best motor cycling days of my life.

This was my first car that I had to get once the family started to grow. It was quite good for the kids as we had a nice mattress in the back so they could sleep when they wanted to. I don`t think this would be allowed now but seet belts were no a requirement then. This was in Durban where I traded it in for a Valiant so we could drive down to Cape Town.

there are also interesting things along the beach. I don`t know where this tree root came from.

It seems that both the Cat and the Frog enjoy the mice on the farm.

Why use the supermarket when all you need is a small patch of ground. This is a bit of the garden that is at the side of the house, so was a waste to grow flowers, but provides all my fresh veggies. lucky i have kids so am able to pass some along when the crop is too large.Image00845

Tonight was a little more eventful than just watching DSTV. My wife as not feeling like very much to eat and fancied a boiled egg sandwich, so I offered to make it. I put the egg on to boil but put the stove onto 6 so as to get the water to boil, I then usually bring it down to 2 and let it simmer. As usual I got involved on my computer and was examining some finds from metal detecting with the digital microscope. This went on for a while and I was absorbed with focusing and taking snap shots. There was then an enormous explosion in the direction of the kitchen which sounded like a 12 bore shot gun. The first though from my wife was that I had been experimenting with something and got it wrong. I went into the kitchen and was horrified by the devastation. I had forgotten the egg boiling on full heat and it had exploded. The egg and it`s shell covered half of the kitchen and was stuck on all the cupboards, ceiling, toaster, microwave and everything else on the working surfaces. My wife said that maybe the chicken laid an egg with a bullet in it. The whole kitchen and dining room smelled like a chicken full of eggs had exploded in a ball of flames. Has anyone else had this problem, except if you try to microwave them ๐Ÿ™‚

frog closeup

I`m still waiting to find another frog sitting in my dahlias.

At least my veggy garden is still producing, I feel sorry for anyone buying at our local supermarket when it`s so easy to grow fresh.

This seems a bit drastic, my wife only asked me to try to stop smoking ๐Ÿ™‚

At least the Sunrise is different every morning and changes as it unfolds.

frog-cat

I was amazed to find out that not only was the Cat catching mice but the frogs also like them. This is a bull frog from the dam and they well outnumber the cats.

Even the Mantis are eating up the gecko`s.

Also when in the local fast food center be very careful where you stand because most cell phones have cameras ๐Ÿ™‚

A bit of a surprise in the veg garden today, I pulled a few Turnips up for some soup and this one weighed 520 grams. the rest were about half the size. My Leeks are also OK for soup b the beetroots are very disappointing only 4 of them have germinated.

I spend quite a bit of time on my computers and it is fascinating to see how some wifi outlets perform. I downloaded Vistumbler for free off the net and found it very good when driving round my area. In the early days there were a lot more open sights but now most people realize that this is expensive and not very good for security.

This one drops out every now and then as the power goes down.

2015-05-20 07.15.06sunrise

Most of the sunrises this last few weeks have been very tame with very little color in them. Maybe it`s because of the rain clouds hanging over them. When it `s clear the only time you get a bit of color is as the sun comes up over the mountain, but without the cloud it`s just very bright with a slight corona of yellow.

Well it is a sad farewell from the Whales as they leave the bay. That is my last free ride on the Whale Watching boats as my Daughter and Son in Law have sold the business. Over the years I have more photos than I can put on a blog so I can`t complain.:-)

Even the shop is not decorated as well as it was, even the Dolphin skeleton has gone.
