As this will probably be my last trip to the UK I have a lot to do in the few week there. When I was there last time my brother only had Alfie the Wolf Hound so it will be great to see if he remembers the walks we had in Mote Park and the local roads. There are now another 2 Grey Hounds so I will have to be careful.

A few photos of Alfie, out and about and sleeping it off. 🙂

Chatham hasn`t changed much over the years, the fruit and veg stalls are still in the street. The most unusual thing was in the other photo taken near the bus center they had a UFO parked and somebody was giving a big speech nearby about visitors from other worlds. 🙂

In the High Street there was an electric three wheeler writing on the walkway controlled by a laptop. further up in town there was a walkway to cross the road, which took a good 6 minutes but on the way back I  went across the road and it took as many seconds. 🙂

Back in Maidstone and we have the Bishops Palace and the Victoria monument both landmarks in the center of town. I normally stay here but it seems to have more closed shops every time I visit. I don`t know what Brexit will do in the future ?

I went to Whitstable to see the wind farm and have lunch and a beer for old times sake. it was very crowded and difficult to find a parking place. When I was in my teens there used to be a pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, anchored out near the wind farm. At the time BBC wouldn`t broadcast Rock and Roll, so it was Medium wave 199 if you wanted to listen. I was living in Broadstairs then so we got a good signal.

My local pub which wasn`t open last time. Some Pubs only open at 15.00 hrs . Many have closed permanently because of no-smoking and the price of beer. The other shop on the corner is a wine and beer shop where I got all my ingredients for making  wine and beer in 5 gallon vessels. This blog is getting a bit long so I wish you all the best, and sign off. 🙂

I haven`t blogged for a while and am suffering from withdrawal as I used to be a bloggerholic. The sky in the morning always seems more interesting in the winter months so  will start off with yesterday.

As we have a problem with water in the Cape its quite surprising that there are so many veggies still growing.I`ve been using rain water for a while now and it`s getting low so may have to use grey water.

There are quite a few insects and other creepy crawlies around. i find the Prey Mantis very resourceful. When they catch a bee or wasp they keep the sting out of the way while they eat it.i was very surprise to see the even eat Gecko`s, but they do it while it is alive.

Do you remember when this coin would buy a box of matches ?cows head

And I thought that only wild animals got mounted. Surely this didn`t need tracking ?

camwet

This little camera makes a good carcam and can also be viewed on my smartphone while shopping, so is better than an alarm. It`s used for divers under water and divers from planes. It came with a host of mounting attachments.

There are still some old friends that come to visit so all is not lost.

It seems that spelling in school is still a problem even though we have so many departments.

During the Whale season here we don`t get photos like this very often as there seems to be quite a radicle change in the whale population.you have to go quite far out in the bay now and most of the Whales are not Southern Right Whales like they were a few years ago.

firstfairyhouse

It`s quite funny how a few years ago I was building fairy houses like this for my grand children and now all they want to see is a smart phone or computer. where do the years go to as you get older ? These photos have been on earlier blogs which seems to be a form of rambling but they are from ones that never went anywhere 🙂

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year , just in case I don`t blog for a while 🙂

I think as you get older you mellow but others have told me it`s just that you give a dam anymore. I do know that  time changes with age, Weeks go very quickly but it takes twice as long now to do things. I also see the funny side of of this joke better now.

it`s funny but the older you get the more you want to forget birthdays. Unfortunately when you have kids and grand kids this is impossible. it`s also usual to get things that are immediately useful on these days. This year was a little different because we have quite a lot of power outages now, so the only thing you can do is read. I was given a nice large rechargeable lamp which not only has 5  settings for the LED`s but can also be charged with the solar panel provided. I can now charge my phones either from the lamp battery or solar power.

solar lamp

As well as this lamp I got a small battery operated one that clips on the page of the book plus lots of eats and some new t-shirts. so this year was an eye opener and I got all useful presents. so maybe life isn`t too bad in the golden Years. 🙂

There are still a lot of birds frequenting the garden and make very interesting animations.

This was taken at the Wolf Sanctuary when I last went there. When I saw this I thought of the old saying` Dog in a Manger ` although it`s not a dog it did make me smile.

This was published many years ago but I just found it on my old computer disc.

………………………………. tone    Do you remember this. When TV`s used to switch off to a dot that usually burned a hole in the screen coating, and you would look carefully at the screen to see if it was switched on because this pattern was usually also burned in, especially if it was 2nd hand.

DON’T TELL YOUR AGE!!!

Someone asked the other day, ‘What was your favorite fast food when you
were growing up?’

‘We didn’t have fast food when I was growing up,’ I informed him. ’All the food was slow.’
‘C’mon, seriously. Where did you eat?’
‘It was a place called ‘at home’, I explained!
‘Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down
together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my
plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.’

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious
internal damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have
permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would
have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have
handled it : Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis, set
foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card.
My parents never drove me to school. I had a bicycle that weighed probably
50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).

We didn’t have a television in our house until I was 19.
It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at
midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came
back on the air at about 6 a.m. and there was usually a locally produced
news and farm show on, featuring local people. I never had a telephone in
my room. The only phone was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had
to listen and make sure some people you didn’t know weren’t already using
the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home… But milk was.
All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers
–my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. He had to get up at
6AM every morning. Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least,
they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies
were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity
or violence or most anything offensive. If you grew up in a generation
before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories
with your children or grandchildren. Just don’t blame me if they bust a
gut laughing. Growing up isn’t what it used to be, is it?

MEMORIES from a friend :

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother’s house (she died in December) and
he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a
stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but
my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt
shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the
ironing board to ’sprinkle’ clothes with because we didn’t have steam
irons. Man, I am old. How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor..
Ignition switches on the dashboard..
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

Older Than Dirt Quiz :
Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about
Ratings at the bottom.
1. Candy cigarettes
2. Coffee shops with tableside juke boxes
3. Home milk delivery in glass bottles
4. Party lines on the telephone
5. Newsreels before the movie
6. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were
there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3
channels [if you were fortunate])

7. Peashooters
8. Howdy Doody
9. 45 RPM records
10. Hi-fi’s
11. Metal ice trays with lever
12. Blue flashbulb
13. Cork popguns
14. Studebakers
15. Wash tub wringers

If you remembered 0-3 = You’re still young
If you remembered 3-6 = You are getting older
If you remembered 7-10 = Don’t tell your age,
If you remembered 11-15 =You’re older than dirt!
I might be older than dirt but those memories are some of the best parts
of my life.
Don’t forget to pass this along!!
Especially to all your really OLD friends….

I am still going through my old photo`s that were taken on film and scanning them, it`s very time consuming but does bring back a lot of memories. This was taken in the early 70`s and the girl in the middle is now 45.

Trek fishing has been closed down in Hout Bay now but it was something that the whole beach got involved in. Since the change in Government why have these things been eliminated?

Next are a few from the UK.

I wondered why this Lilly grew so tall and was told it had a virus. That may be right as year after year it did get shorter.

This was the new Tesco supermarket until some youngsters decided to set light to the wheelie bins. Not only did they burn the bins but the whole place burned down. When I went on holiday a few years ago it had been rebuilt and is the largest one in the area.

Every year they have a river festival in Maidstone on the Medway which is very well attended. There are plenty of places to eat and beer can by bought from moving hand carts, in plastic tumblers. The evening is finished off with a great firework display from a building to the right of the photograph.

I was asking a friend to name the capital cities of countries in Africa which for an Englishman was quite good until we got to South Africa and he said Nkandla. 🙂 🙂
It`s just that he had heard the name so often on the news in the UK. 🙂
