Old-Rectory-Plettenberg-Bay-circa-1900-Restorica-1981-A-Kingston-Gore-Cuthbert

This is the Old Rectory when there was a lot of camping due to it being very close to the sea. It is privately owned now and in bad repair, most has been taken over by vagrants.

Across the road is the wood shed which is also in bad repair. Most of the wood used for window frames have been used for firewood.

In the foreground is the Wood shed and the Rectory is in the trees now.

This was an Anchor from one of the first boats to bring in wood.

When I first came here there used to be a Wagon complete. The problem was that the municipality did not consider this area as Historic so it has been used for firewood and scrap by vagrants.

The town is usually quiet unless we have a Biker funeral or the Plett Ragerain spider

We do get a few surprises when getting up in the morning but that just life.  🙂

Main Beach is on the far left, the Beacon Isle hotel is on the left of the beach.

This is one of the landing spots on the Main Beach the hotel is then on the right.

If you like Mushrooms, DON`T pick these.

These seem OK, BUT always check before cooking.

Ill finish off with a visitor to the flower garden, this frog is so small it doesnt even bend the flower stem. End of Part Two……………..

As this will probably be my last trip to the UK I have a lot to do in the few week there. When I was there last time my brother only had Alfie the Wolf Hound so it will be great to see if he remembers the walks we had in Mote Park and the local roads. There are now another 2 Grey Hounds so I will have to be careful.

A few photos of Alfie, out and about and sleeping it off. 🙂

Chatham hasn`t changed much over the years, the fruit and veg stalls are still in the street. The most unusual thing was in the other photo taken near the bus center they had a UFO parked and somebody was giving a big speech nearby about visitors from other worlds. 🙂

In the High Street there was an electric three wheeler writing on the walkway controlled by a laptop. further up in town there was a walkway to cross the road, which took a good 6 minutes but on the way back I  went across the road and it took as many seconds. 🙂

Back in Maidstone and we have the Bishops Palace and the Victoria monument both landmarks in the center of town. I normally stay here but it seems to have more closed shops every time I visit. I don`t know what Brexit will do in the future ?

I went to Whitstable to see the wind farm and have lunch and a beer for old times sake. it was very crowded and difficult to find a parking place. When I was in my teens there used to be a pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, anchored out near the wind farm. At the time BBC wouldn`t broadcast Rock and Roll, so it was Medium wave 199 if you wanted to listen. I was living in Broadstairs then so we got a good signal.

My local pub which wasn`t open last time. Some Pubs only open at 15.00 hrs . Many have closed permanently because of no-smoking and the price of beer. The other shop on the corner is a wine and beer shop where I got all my ingredients for making  wine and beer in 5 gallon vessels. This blog is getting a bit long so I wish you all the best, and sign off. 🙂

The fires seemed to have burned out for the time being, but there are still a lot of pine trees still standing. We have a Berg Wind again today so there has been another fire warning from the local firefighters. I think all the Vynbos shrubs that have been partly burned should now be cut level with the ground as they are so dry and can still burn. There are quite a few holes in the ground which look like Snake holes but they are where the shrubs used to be before the fire.

It has only been a few weeks and a lot of the vynbos is starting to grow back. We had a wake here for the firefighters that lost their lives during the big fire. The town was filled by Bikers on Harley`s and filled the main  road for most of the day. Last weekend was the turn of the Municipality and local residents, this was much quieter and smaller.

While i was gardening I heard these women singing in the distance and it sounded like a mass march but I was so surprised at how few arrived. The singing was very good and they were very well behaved even though they had to wait a long time to get their voices heard.

To show how ridiculous things have got, I will put a joke that was on a newspaper web site.

zuma joke

It is still very puzzling that 26 fires started in many different places at the same time. There have been some arrests for arson and theft from farms and buildings that were evacuated. The disappointing thing is that articles were stolen from the very places that were trying to help the victims of the fires. These were items like a coffee machine, pressure cooker, hot plates and other kitchen ware. This may cause people not to help next time we have an emergency.2017-06-27 22.35.05

I am still getting Hestony trucks parking outside with their refrigeration motors running all night. This time I was lucky a the Police agreed that he couldn`t. It was a restful night but I think the chicken in the back had defrosted a bit by the time he left in the morning.

I think there are going to be a lot of questions asked and accusations made after this fire. I got a very disturbing email from Thailand about how JZ is treating these areas now they have become DA, maybe Trump would call it fake news, only time will tell .

Two people with other problems on their mind.

At least the gale force winds didn`t come to this area.

The sun rises are looking a bit better now the smoke has cleared.

Still no reply from Hestony transport, except the lorries are more frequent since my complain to Hello Peter.

We have had some very strange fires in the area where small plots of land far away from the main blaze have set light. this is the only aerial photo that was got from the local free newspaper. A fire that started in the middle of a location as the fires raged on the other side of town ?

Things have been a bit hectic around Plett since the big fire.Taking a drive round the back roads there are still a lot of places that need to be cleared of half burned shrubs and trees. There are still hot spots around which were caused mainly by sparks blown in the wind.

We are having a good rain at the moment so the little fires should get dampened. We went to the farm at the weaken and there were still a few swirls of smoke coming from the bush. They were mostly the pine needles and dead leaves but still flare up when the berg wind blew. It`s been a cold wind for a few days so that does help.
creeping fires

One of the other problems is the water restrictions. I don`t worry so much with the flowers anymore but having a water butt enables me to keep my veggies growing. It`s amassing how little water is needed on some veggies to keep them in good health. It`s very strange how a house that is only meters away from the fire front can escape completely.
houses so close
This farm only had vynbos around it so was not difficult to save.

It is easy to see a local car now in the car park as they are coated with ash. I left my car windows just cracked open but the next day it looked like a snow globe inside. Not only is it like living in an ashtray when traveling round but the inside of the car had to have a body spray. There has been a few cases of youngsters letting off crackers and signal flares in the bush beneath the lookout, some have been arrested. I think they are trying to get some time off school because the one I saw was a local teenager .
sunrise b w
Today the sunrise was like a black and white film, so it will be a few days before there is some colour. There was at least a little green still surviving amongst the ashes.

I haven`t blogged for a while and am suffering from withdrawal as I used to be a bloggerholic. The sky in the morning always seems more interesting in the winter months so  will start off with yesterday.

As we have a problem with water in the Cape its quite surprising that there are so many veggies still growing.I`ve been using rain water for a while now and it`s getting low so may have to use grey water.

There are quite a few insects and other creepy crawlies around. i find the Prey Mantis very resourceful. When they catch a bee or wasp they keep the sting out of the way while they eat it.i was very surprise to see the even eat Gecko`s, but they do it while it is alive.
