Things have been a bit hectic around Plett since the big fire.Taking a drive round the back roads there are still a lot of places that need to be cleared of half burned shrubs and trees. There are still hot spots around which were caused mainly by sparks blown in the wind.

We are having a good rain at the moment so the little fires should get dampened. We went to the farm at the weaken and there were still a few swirls of smoke coming from the bush. They were mostly the pine needles and dead leaves but still flare up when the berg wind blew. It`s been a cold wind for a few days so that does help.

One of the other problems is the water restrictions. I don`t worry so much with the flowers anymore but having a water butt enables me to keep my veggies growing. It`s amassing how little water is needed on some veggies to keep them in good health. It`s very strange how a house that is only meters away from the fire front can escape completely.

This farm only had vynbos around it so was not difficult to save.

It is easy to see a local car now in the car park as they are coated with ash. I left my car windows just cracked open but the next day it looked like a snow globe inside. Not only is it like living in an ashtray when traveling round but the inside of the car had to have a body spray. There has been a few cases of youngsters letting off crackers and signal flares in the bush beneath the lookout, some have been arrested. I think they are trying to get some time off school because the one I saw was a local teenager .

Today the sunrise was like a black and white film, so it will be a few days before there is some colour. There was at least a little green still surviving amongst the ashes.

I haven`t blogged for a while and am suffering from withdrawal as I used to be a bloggerholic. The sky in the morning always seems more interesting in the winter months so  will start off with yesterday.

As we have a problem with water in the Cape its quite surprising that there are so many veggies still growing.I`ve been using rain water for a while now and it`s getting low so may have to use grey water.

There are quite a few insects and other creepy crawlies around. i find the Prey Mantis very resourceful. When they catch a bee or wasp they keep the sting out of the way while they eat it.i was very surprise to see the even eat Gecko`s, but they do it while it is alive.

Whilst cutting up a Butternut Squash these seeds were found growing inside of it, has anyone seen this before ? Some of the shoots had green on them which usually only happens when exposed to light ?

A lot has happened in this last few days, but in my opinion it should have happened years ago after his first blunder.

Well after trying to get some of these Sea Beans to sprout I have taken a drastic method. On the large one that I soaked for a couple of weeks and then planted, but didn`t sprout, I filed it on the join until I found what looks like a joining of the two halves.

Have you ever used Firefox by Mozilla, I found it much better than the IE that comes with Windows. I do however have a problem with Windows Explorer shutting down now and then.

I`m up early again as it`s mushroom time, these mushrooms are Pine Rings and are very flavorsome. I like them as a snack, lightly cooked in a bit of butter and served on a piece of toast.

Unlike this little frog the only ones that I have seen in the flowers have been pure white. The reason I was unable to photograph it was that I had the wrong glasses on and thinking it was a bug I shook it off.

I haven`t done much blogging for a few months so this one will be a bit long. Have you ever tried to revive an old blog that`s on another site, I have and it can be very disappointing when the forbidden notice comes up on the screen.

forbiden

This came up on iblog which is not a problem as it hasn`t been updated since 2012.

This unfortunately was taken with a bad cell phone and is out of focus. The pictures at the bottom used to be changed every day to show who were the top favorites.

Trying to grow my big Sea Bean didn`t work out very well as I over watered it in a heavy soil and it went black. I think I should have grown it like the Avacado Pear pips on the window ledge.

I still enjoy watching the sunrise every morning with my first coffee and cigarette. then at night time there is always the Sunset, if I remember.

Life is still amusing especially when you see things like this. Why are these men shoveling gravel into a front loader? Maybe someone didn`t read the instruction manual for the front loader.

This Autogiro is quite strange as it was built from a kit. It has a pusher prop at the back and the rotor spins as it moves forward to give it lift. I see it quite often down near the beach but it landed one day at the Airport near the farm. I don`t think they travel very fast as the helicopters leave it well behind.

These Pansy Shells used to be found in abundance on the Plettenberg Bay beaches many years ago but I haven`t seen one there in the last five years. When I first started detecting on the beaches people said maybe I would find some shells there but so far they have been allusive.

If you think that it never snows in South African towns just look at this photo taken a few years ago. This is only about 200 meters from the sea. Even the beach had snow on it.

This was my brothers back garden in the UK the same year, as you can see the snow was a lot deeper there even 6 months later.

For people who like memorial foot paths, this was inlaid into the pavement near Buckingham Palace. Very similar to the sidewalk near Hollywood in the USA but smaller.

At least the sunrises are different every day which makes them very photographic.

Although Queeny was a feral cat she gave us two years of company. At first she was called `Beryl the Feral `. She was a very scrawny cat and would not let you get within half a length of the garden near her. Through putting food and milk down every day she became close and filled out to be like a full size house cat. When it came to food time she would come close and rub aggainst your legs and twine around them, but if you tried to touch her she would rush away. This suited us as she slept outside on a cane chair, but as soon as the window opened in the morning she would jump up an meow for breakfast. Last week she came back from searching the neighborhood and began coughing, because she couldn`t eat her pellets we had to get so Tuna and mash it , he kept that down for a couple of days . On the following Monday we got Paws to come and look at her, they decided to try and get her into a cage. that proved quite a problem with her being feral, but we managed it. She was taken away but they informed us a few hours latter that the damage to her throat was too bad so they had to put her down. the whole family seems to be have pet problems, my son cat  `Tabatha` was run over and killed last Tuesday and my youngest daughter had their dog Gipsy die of old age.

gipsy

This was `gipsy` three years ago when she still swam in the dam on a farm where she was staying.

After soaking this Sea Bean for over a week I decided to grind a bit off the edge to assist it to start sprouting. The closest name I can get is that this bean is some type of hamburger bean but when it grows we will find out where it comes from. Most of the Sea Bean info on the net comes from the USA so is difficult to apply.
