They used to party a lot round here before the fire.

having a party

I mentioned in an earlier blog that the baboons had been burned out of their natural habitat up on the airport road. even the veggie garden at the farm is half burned out so there are only sweet potatoes there. In my veggie garden the sweet potatoes did not yield much when I dug them up, there seemed very few big ones, but the baboons found them digging with their hands. On going round the side of the house after hearing several grunts I found a big Baboon sitting on the wall eating a very large sweet potato as if it was a Hotdog. they had eaten most of the Turnips and pulled all the tomato plants out. This was after the last fire so I`m just waiting now to see what will happen.

the whole family

When they came last time it seemed like a family affair.

When big daddy appeared in the bushes , things changed.

mouthy

On showing his teeth it was best to go inside 🙂

inhouse

I think he`s outmaneuvered me, but he looks a lot smaller and did not like being on the same stoop.

I am busy pulling as many turnips and sweet potatoes up as can be used and just hope they don`t rubbish my bean plants like last time. It`s time now to plant the winter veg in the front where an eye can be kept on them. So most of the things used in the kitchen are mostly in pots or troughs.
The ground around the farm areas will be quite fertile for the next crop as there is a lot of burned foliage and ash to dig in, before it`s blown away with the wind. There are a lot of places that I saw in that area that have already got vynbos coming through after a week or so. I think most of the problems were caused by the pine trees as the vynbos needs a fire to get regrowth and are not so difficult to contain, as I saw on one of the farms nearby. Our municipality decided many months ago not to collect garden refuge which is causing fly tipping. I think if they collected it still and made it into compost for sale, it would produce employment for those who cannot do technical jobs and improve the local situation.

I think it`s time to dress up and scare them away.

Well we have had some good rain lately so that must be good, and the wind has dropped.

I think there are going to be a lot of questions asked and accusations made after this fire. I got a very disturbing email from Thailand about how JZ is treating these areas now they have become DA, maybe Trump would call it fake news, only time will tell .

Two people with other problems on their mind.

At least the gale force winds didn`t come to this area.

The sun rises are looking a bit better now the smoke has cleared.

Still no reply from Hestony transport, except the lorries are more frequent since my complain to Hello Peter.

We have had some very strange fires in the area where small plots of land far away from the main blaze have set light. this is the only aerial photo that was got from the local free newspaper. A fire that started in the middle of a location as the fires raged on the other side of town ?

Things have been a bit hectic around Plett since the big fire.Taking a drive round the back roads there are still a lot of places that need to be cleared of half burned shrubs and trees. There are still hot spots around which were caused mainly by sparks blown in the wind.

We are having a good rain at the moment so the little fires should get dampened. We went to the farm at the weaken and there were still a few swirls of smoke coming from the bush. They were mostly the pine needles and dead leaves but still flare up when the berg wind blew. It`s been a cold wind for a few days so that does help.
creeping fires

One of the other problems is the water restrictions. I don`t worry so much with the flowers anymore but having a water butt enables me to keep my veggies growing. It`s amassing how little water is needed on some veggies to keep them in good health. It`s very strange how a house that is only meters away from the fire front can escape completely.
houses so close
This farm only had vynbos around it so was not difficult to save.

It is easy to see a local car now in the car park as they are coated with ash. I left my car windows just cracked open but the next day it looked like a snow globe inside. Not only is it like living in an ashtray when traveling round but the inside of the car had to have a body spray. There has been a few cases of youngsters letting off crackers and signal flares in the bush beneath the lookout, some have been arrested. I think they are trying to get some time off school because the one I saw was a local teenager .
sunrise b w
Today the sunrise was like a black and white film, so it will be a few days before there is some colour. There was at least a little green still surviving amongst the ashes.

Plettenberg Bay has had a very traumatic time as has so many other places along the coast. These are some of Plett`s darkest hours.
fire 1fire2
The aftermath of these fires have left many homeless as many farms and gated communities have lost everything.

Some farms due mainly to volunteer firemen have managed to keep their houses.

On a lighter note a few weeks ago we had a double rainbow, but i couldn`t find the pot of Gold.

The Cape Fur Seal colony on Robberg peninsular are still thriving as though nothing has happened.

I wish to thank all the fire fighters, emergency crews, paramedics and distributors of aid for their great effort during these dark times.

Today the weather seems very bad towards Cape Town. We have had a Berg wind for the last few days and my climbing beans are looking very wind blown. I had put a shield round them and give them a good watering. The sky is quite overcast today and we have a Velt fire towards Knysna which can be seen on the right hand side of the photo.smoke

Another view from the same site above Plettenberg Bay.

As you can see, it`s also a bit dark here too. Not a good sunrise today.

bad day

As you can see, the problems in my last blog have only got worse. 🙂 We even had a power outage to add to this, but at least today we have water. 🙂
